“The Men Who Stare at Goats” is a book by Ron Jonson describing the operations of an obscure special forces section of the US military that has devoted itself to developing paranormal powers.  The unit was created under the auspices of Jim Channon, a US soldier who had seen service in Vietnam and proposed that the army investigate alternative strategies for acchieving battlefield aims.  According to Wikipedia this involved, attempts to overcome the enemy with “Good Vibrations”, carrying Lambs onto the battlefield, using Shiatsu healing techniques on the wounded and employing “mind powers”.   Since that time, these techniques have been pursued assiduously by the military, needless to say, with more of an emphasis on the evil vibrations rather than the good.  Channon’s extraordinary book describes some of these efforts, including, “the men who stare at goats”, willing them to die with their mind and others who try to “walk through walls” .  I can’t wait until Monty Python gets a hold of this material.  Though they may already be in the employ of the army, trying to make a weapon that will make the enemy, “die laughing”.  Though it looks like George Clooney may have beaten everybody to it.
